“I want a Princess with a blue dress, red shoes with pink bows, blue eyes, brown hair, and a crown of flowers on her head.” Those are the words of a five year old…though not directly quoted.
My niece asked me to decorate her birthday cake with a princess drawn on the cake. She was inspired by Saint Lucy Yi Zhenmei, one of her favorite saints from the, Princesses of Heaven Book.
So the day before her fifth birthday we sat down at the kitchen table and started to design her birthday cake. My niece acted as chief of designs for the cake and I took orders on all the details therein…below I have recounted the details in photos.
The Cake in its Entirety – A Recount of Details

For simplicity I’ve thrown all the photos into a gallery above. Let me explain. With a sketchpad in hand, I sketched out a template for the cake using a photo of Saint Lucy for reference. Then I cut out the Saint Lucy template and stuck it to the cake. Tracing over the template with a sharp knife left the imprint of her outline.
If you follow the photos you will see I filled in her blue dress with a bag of frosting, added details with pink frosting, and added her face and hands with a decoration of letters to celebrate the day of birth encompassing the cake’s outer edge. We made brown frosting with some protein powder, for we had to use “healthy stuff” – no food dyes with this cake.
We used mini chocolate chips for the eyes and for a final touch, at the request of soon to be five year old, we threw some lilies on the outside edge of the cake. Also a blue ring around the top edge.
And there you have it. You should now have the knowledge to recreate this cake for your own birthday or that of your kids…or your own niece.
But most importantly, the cake tasted very good! I would eat it again.
