Happy Easter Saturday everyone! or whatever day you happen to read this…I am finally getting around to posting my egg painting I painted on Holy Saturday this year. In recommendation from my brother, I painted the Resurrection of Jesus on the egg by Piero della Francesca.
“The Resurrection, a fresco by Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca, was produced in the 1460s for the Palazzo della Residenza in the town of Sansepolcro, Tuscany, Italy. The Conservatori, or leading magistrates and governors, prayed before the artwork before beginning their meetings at the Gothic-style Residenza, where Piero was commissioned to paint the fresco.” Source
It all started with a white egg…that of a chicken of course! I poked a hole in both ends with a pin, put my mouth on one side, and blew through one end. What this did was it created pressure differences and fluid dynamics to expel the yolk and albumen from the eggshell.
As you see from the photos the plain white egg and then moving along we have the yoke all expelled from the shell and then this year I also ate the egg…no waste of material this year. I chose to roast cashews and added a bit of cheese to the top of the egg. And finally I ate the egg for lunch.
And of course I need to show you the egg in is entirety with paint encompassed about the shell. First we have the sketch. Using Piero’s painting as a reference, I hand sketched with pencil onto the egg shell. Then you see next a roughing of color on the shell with acrylic paint. This was most difficult believe it or not, paint does not stick well to an eggshell, so I needed many layers to get a good base to paint on. The brush kept wanting to peel the paint off the shell with each stroke. So the next time you paint on a egg remember to use lots of layers. One will not do. And finally you will see my hand holding the finished piece.
