WIP Wednesdays: Behind the Art of Saint Philomena

Saints A-Z | Saint Philomena

Who Is Saint Philomena?

Not much is known about Saint Philomena. She was a Greek princess who became a virgin martyr and died at 13-years-old.

This account is from a Neapolitan Nun: When Philomena was 13-years-old, she took a vow of consecrated virginity. After her father took his family to Rome to make peace, Emperor Diocletian fell in love with Philomena. When she refused to marry him, she was subjected to torture.

St. Philomena was scourged, drowned with an anchor attached to her, and shot with arrows. Each time she was attacked angels took to her side and healed her through prayer.

Finally, the Emperor had Philomena decapitated. According to the story, her death came on a Friday at three in the afternoon, the same as Jesus.

Saint Philomena | Colored Pencil Drawing

Yes, you heard that right! I am showing you a work in progress…a WIP. Now, if you’ve been following my work for a while, you might know this is new for me. I usually wait until the finished piece is complete. Only then do I show progress photos and what I’m working on. That is until now…I’ve decided to start another series called, “WIP WednesdaysWork In Progress Wednesdays. Let me know what you think and if you’d like to see me keep this series going.

A Bit of Background

Another A-Z Saints drawing in the works.💪 Plus, as a bonus this one will come with a time lapse video. (I know someone who will be excited about this).

STORY TIME: Yes, this one comes with a story. These ones are my favorite, when I get to tell some background info on the piece. I don’t know the exact time but at some point I was organizing this series for the blog. I put together a spreadsheet for each letter of the alphabet and getting feast days sorted out. Anyway, I found reference photos for a few that I knew I would create. I then set off to work sketching them out.

So I actually have had this drawing of Saint Philomena for quite some time. I just haven’t had a chance to add colored pencil to the paper yet. And guess what? Yup…you guessed it. Saint Philomena wasn’t the only one I sketched out…😮 Yes, and I will leave that as an open ended statement. If you want, take a guess in the comments…

One of My First Videos

Saint Philomena was one of the first time lapse videos I featured on my YouTube channel. My second video to be exact, was an oil painting time lapse of Saint Philomena. That was five years ago.

Stay Tuned…

I hope you enjoyed this new blog series: WIP Wednesdays. I hope to continue as projects come up. Obviously it won’t be every Wednesday. But when I have a drawing going I’ll do my best to share with all my readers. Please reach out down below in the comments. Any ideas, comments, or suggestions are always welcome. Take a guess on the other A-Z Saint I have sketched out. It may or may not begin with the letter, F.

Thank you! And I hope to see you again when this Saint Philomena drawing is complete.

“Pray to Saint Philomena, What ever you ask from her, She will obtain for you.”
