Happy New Year!

I know, it’s well into February but it is still the new year. And with it being the new year…comes a New Year’s Drawing… or sketch?

Above you will see the grid, step one of this drawing. Actually the first step was trying to sketch my subject freehand…I said trying, because it was not going well so I drew a grid on the paper to give a guide for my hand.

And now step 2 complete you’ll see the subject at hand. And if I’ve rendered it well with the pencil you should be able to make up the sketch as the Holy Family.

While visiting a church dedicated to Saint Joseph on our way home from a weekend trip I snapped a photo of this statue of the Holy Family and decided it would do well for my New Year’s Sketch.

And now for the ink! It is fun to see the pencil sketch come alive with ink. This is actually the first time I have drawn the Holy Family…wait wait, I have. I’ve drawn the Nativity Scene a couple of times, so I have drawn them.

Here is the finished drawing.

A close up. I am happy with how Saint Joseph’s face turned out. Baby Jesus’ face was hard as the ink got a little thick and the paper was small…but no excuses I guess?

I’m sure it is hard to tell which is the drawing and which is the statue, so I conveniently labeled them for you.

I hope you enjoyed the progress photos of the sketch of the Holy Family! And I hope dear reader that your New Year is joyful and filled with many blessings!😀

  1. Wow! The drawing and statue are so alike I wouldn’t have been able to tell them apart if you had not labeled them! Great work.
