Our Lady and Child Jesus

Hello there, glad you made it back! Below you will see the workings of a commissioned art piece. It is a drawing in charcoal on an 11 x 14 piece of paper. It is depicting the Mother of God with the Child Jesus wrapped in her arms.

To begin this work I transferred the design onto a piece of paper using the high tech “hard charcoal pencil” to provide a light line weight. And the grid system.

The beginnings of this piece. As you can see the face of Mary is starting to emerge from the paper. By differentiating pressure from the pencil it’s fairly straightforward to add contrasting values to make the eye perceive depth.

The next step I drew the skin or Mary’s arms. Like I’ve said in previous posts I like to do the face and skin first because I find them more difficult than clothing and such. And besides, if I don’t get the face right the whole drawing will be ruined.

And the final step for me was to finish the clothing and background which I think went pretty well. I didn’t do too many progress photos because…because I have a timelapse! And I know there are quite of few of my followers who LOVE TIMELAPSES! So without further ado…Look below and play the video. What are you waiting for? Stop reading this…

Thank you for reading my blog! I hope you enjoyed the timelapse. I’ve got more ideas in my head waiting to be drawn…or painted. What is your favorite medium?

Merry Christmas! 🎄Blessed last days of Advent! ✝️
